What You Should Know About Your Architect

Building your dream home often requires a custom home design. In order to get exactly what you want, you are going to need to hire an architect. Since most people don’t hire them often, you should know a few things about them before signing a contract.

Licensing

Most states have license requirements for working architects. Find out what your state requires, and then make sure your architect has it. The license is similar to an assurance that the architect knows what he or she is doing.

Insurance

Like most professions, architects are required to carry insurance. You should make sure that they carry at least enough to cover your project if something goes wrong. If they do not have insurance, you could be stuck paying for a job twice should something go horribly wrong.

Portfolio

Before hiring anyone, ask to see their portfolio. Most architects have photographs of their completed work. This will give you an idea about their experience as well as their capabilities. It will also give you an idea of what kind of work they specialize in. If most of their custom home design is in one style and you want another, it may lead to design problems later on.

Time

Although busy architects are often fair and good at their jobs, they might not have time for yours. Make sure they have the time to see your project through. Ask them to give you a timeframe or schedule. You want them to be able to devote their attention to your project.

Services

Not all architectural services are alike. Some only provide designs, while others will work with you and your contractor throughout the project. Talk about what the architect offers and what you need before you sign a contract with them.

Creating a custom home design is a rewarding experience when you have the right architect. Take the time to ask questions and make sure that you are getting exactly what you want before hiring one.
